{"id":16334,"date":"2019-10-10T13:43:35","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T17:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ojen.ca\/?page_id=16334"},"modified":"2025-07-29T20:12:48","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T00:12:48","slug":"2018-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/about\/ojen-awards\/ojen-chief-justices-award\/2018-2","title":{"rendered":"2018 Sergeant Milton Ferguson"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sergeant Milton Ferguson, from Toronto Police Services\u2019 52 Division, received the 2018 Chief Justices\u2019 Award in recognition of his outstanding efforts to improve relations between police and youth in Toronto\u2019s marginalized and racialized communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For over 10 years he volunteered on numerous OJEN justice education projects.&nbsp; He represented the police perspective to youth and offered practical strategies for handling encounters with police to avoid escalation of conflict.&nbsp; In many cases he provided youth with their first positive encounter with a police officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0906-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15099\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0906-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0906-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0906-2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only did Sergeant Ferguson help youth understand the police, he shared what he learned with his police colleagues so they would be better able to serve their communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;In presenting the award to Sergeant Ferguson, Chief Justice Strathy commented on the significance of his commitment to community engagement:&nbsp; \u201c<em>This kind of life-to-life dialogue is the most challenging but most effective formula for change, and Sgt.
