{"id":16179,"date":"2019-09-30T13:12:43","date_gmt":"2019-09-30T17:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ojen.ca\/?p=16179"},"modified":"2019-12-06T11:06:56","modified_gmt":"2019-12-06T16:06:56","slug":"new-online-resources-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/new-online-resources-2019","title":{"rendered":"OJEN&#8217;s New Online Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>OJEN\u2019s Educator Support Department has been hard at work creating new teaching materials for law teachers. &nbsp;Four new resources have recently been posted on our website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<u><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/resource\/top-five-2018\"><strong>Top Five Cases of 2018<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong><\/h4><\/u>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight of the Toronto Summer Law Institute each\nyear, is a presentation by a judge about five significant cases that have\nrecently appeared before the Court of Appeal for Ontario.&nbsp; The judge explains what makes the cases\ninteresting from an educational perspective, offering his insight and\nobservations.&nbsp;&nbsp; Each year OJEN produces a\nteaching resource based on these Top Five Cases.&nbsp; It consists of a case summary, background information\non the issues, the decision and reasons for the decision, and suggested\ndiscussion questions for the class. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Top Five Cases of 2018 have recently been posted\non the OJEN website.&nbsp; They include:<\/p>&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Law Society of British Columbia v Trinity\nWestern University<\/li><li>Rankin (Rankin&#8217;s Garage and Sales) v J.J.<\/li><li>Groia v Law Society of Upper Canada<\/li><li>Williams Lake Indian Band v Canada<\/li><li>R. v Bingley<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Top Five cases are relevant to Constitutional and\nCharter Law and a variety of other grade 11 and 12 law topics.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<u><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/resource\/jury-duty-ontario\"><strong>Jury Duty in Ontario and Mock Jury\nSelection<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/h4><\/u>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the\nmost exciting new resources now available on our website is <strong>Jury Duty in Ontario and Mock Jury\nSelection<\/strong>.&nbsp; It introduces students to\nthe jury selection process in Ontario, including how the jury roll is formed,\nhow jurors are summoned, and how they are selected in criminal and civil trials.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nexamines the issue of the underrepresentation of First Nations and other minorities\non juries as a critical human rights issue affecting the Canadian justice\nsystem.&nbsp; The teacher guide includes\nteaching strategies, discussion questions, classroom activities and links to\nadditional resources<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mock\nJury Selection exercise is designed to help students understand the process of\nestablishing an impartial jury. The simulation will assess jury selection in\nhypothetical scenarios. When incorporated into a lesson, this task will\nsimulate the entire process of jury selection. The re-enactment of this task\nrequires students to play the role of lawyers, a judge, a registrar,\nprospective jurors, and the accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<u><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/resource\/steps-justice-employment-law\"><strong>Steps to Justice: Employment Law<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/h4><\/u>\n\n\n\n<p>OJEN is\ncollaborating with our strategic partner, Community Legal Education Ontario\n(CLEO) to create a series of workshops based on their excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/stepstojustice.ca\/\">Steps\nto Justice<\/a>\nwebsite. Steps to Justice provides legal information and clear steps Ontarians\ncan take when they are faced with some of the most commonly-experienced legal\nproblems.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employment Law is the first of a series of modules that animate the information found on the website for school and community audiences. Using hypothetical scenarios, students explore legal questions by navigating the practical step-by-step information on the website. They learn how to use the website to find forms, self-help guides and referral information that can be used in working through actual legal problems.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<u><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/resource\/steps-to-justice-criminal-law\"><strong>Steps to Justice: Criminal Law<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/h4><\/u>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCan the police stop me on the street and ask for my ID?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShould I sign a peace bond to deal with my criminal case?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat can happen if I miss my court date?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are a few of the questions posed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/resource\/steps-to-justice-criminal-law\"><strong>Steps to Justice \u2013 Criminal Law resource<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Steps to Justice Criminal Law Module, as with the Employment Law module, comes with PowerPoint classroom presentation, student work sheets, six different employment law scenarios and a facilitator\u2019s guide and answer sheet. The guide provides detailed instructions on how to deliver the workshop.
