{"id":17729,"date":"2020-02-18T13:39:23","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T18:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ojen.ca\/?p=17729"},"modified":"2020-02-18T14:54:53","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T19:54:53","slug":"law-students-deliver-ple-on-safety-and-sexting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/law-students-deliver-ple-on-safety-and-sexting","title":{"rendered":"Law Students Deliver PLE on Safety and Sexting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Each\nyear, OJEN\u2019s Justice Education Fellowship program provides Public Legal\nEducation training and experience to a select group of Ontario law\nstudents.&nbsp; Before the start of the fall\nsemester, Fellows meet with OJEN staff to learn about our justice education\nproject models, facilitation techniques for youth audiences and tips for working\nwith teachers, volunteers and community partners. Each Fellow\ncommits to delivering a minimum of three justice education projects, support\nlocal OJEN Committees when applicable and contribute to various OJEN activities\nthat arise during the Fellowship period.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the\n2019-2020 academic year, six Fellows from six universities are delivering a\nwide range of justice education projects with ongoing support from OJEN staff.&nbsp; Each student chooses projects according to\ntheir areas of interest or based on requests from the local community.&nbsp; Among the projects delivered by OJEN Fellows\nthis year are workshops on cyberbullying, employment law and alternative\ndispute resolution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/training-201910-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/training-201910-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/training-201910-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/training-201910-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nToronto, Miscia Sullivan from Osgoode Hall Law School and Amanda Cutinha from\nUniversity of Toronto Faculty of Law joined forces recently to develop and\ndeliver a workshop on Safety and Sexting for high school classes. Their\npresentation focuses on giving students information on civil and criminal laws\nrelated to the sharing of intimate images online and other potential\nconsequences that may occur when intimate images are shared. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe knew that it was important not\nto come across as judgmental.&nbsp; We know that many young people are\nsexting.&nbsp; We want students to be safe and lawful. Young people need to\nunderstand the social, personal, and legal consequences for the person sharing the\nimage and to know the effects it has on the person whose image is shared,\u201d <\/em>Miscia explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda and\nMiscia made use of their OJEN training to create an interactive agenda that\nengaged the students, to create and maintain a respectful classroom environment\nthat allowed open discussion about a sensitive subject, and to coordinate with\nteachers and justice sector volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda and\nMiscia received on-site assistance from Shane Martinez, a criminal defense\nlawyer who provided legal expertise to answer questions students had about\nattaining consent and about sexual assault laws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far they\nhave delivered the workshop to two classes and hope to deliver the workshop\nagain .&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OJEN\nFellows expand OJEN&#8217;s programming reach across Ontario by delivering a total of\nat least 18 justice education projects among them per year.&nbsp; &nbsp;The Fellows\nprogram is an important way to insure law students entering their careers are\nprepared to make PLE part of their lives.&nbsp;\nThis promises to have lasting impact in the sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, OJEN\u2019s Justice Education Fellowship program provides Public Legal Education training and experience to a select group of Ontario law students.&nbsp; Before the start of the fall semester, Fellows meet with OJEN staff to learn about our justice education project models, facilitation techniques for youth audiences and tips for working with teachers, volunteers and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1232,"featured_media":15327,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_eb_attr":"","inline_featured_image":false,"ub_ctt_via":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-17729","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-from-the-ojen-blog"],"acf":[],"featured_image_src":"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Court-benches-stock-picture-2.jpg","author_info":{"display_name":"Raras","author_link":"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/author\/raras"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.3 -
