I am very pleased to announce to secondary school teachers that they can now register their classes<\/a> for the second edition of D\u00e9fi de la Charte<\/a>, the Francophone Charter Challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new D\u00e9fi promises to be exciting! It will be about a police operation carried out on suspicion of drug trafficking. Police detained the suspects’ vehicle, conducted an on-site interrogation and searched a cell phone. The four legal issues under debate relate to the right not to be arbitrarily detained under section 9 of the Charter, the right to legal assistance under sections 10 (a) and (b) of the Charter, the right to protection from unreasonable search under section 8 of the Charter and the admission of improperly obtained evidence under section 24 (2) of the Charter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u00e9fi will of course be very interesting for law classes, but other professors should consider it too! It’s an amazing tool for any course where it is important to understand how the Charter influences our everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is unique opportunity to develop critical thinking, research, leadership and project management skills in a 100% francophone environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition itself might represent a significant incentive, but it’s just the icing on the cake. What will benefit the students is trying to complete the project, regardless of whether they get there or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a tentative schedule:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday October 11<\/em>: opening of registrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday, November 1<\/em>5th: start of the program, distribution of documents, opening of online forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday December <\/em>17th: deadline for submission of briefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January: final at the Court of Appeal (by videoconference)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
