{"id":22992,"date":"2022-04-28T12:39:25","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T16:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ojen.ca\/?p=22992"},"modified":"2022-04-28T12:39:29","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T16:39:29","slug":"justice-patricia-hennessy-profile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/justice-patricia-hennessy-profile","title":{"rendered":"OJEN\u2019s 20th Anniversary Volunteer Profile &#8211; Justice Patricia Hennessy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201c<em>I have found that schools, classrooms and student activities are some of the best<\/em> <em>places to learn from and about other communities<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The judiciary has played a vital role in the establishment and ongoing success of OJEN throughout our 20 year history.\u00a0 Justice Patricia Hennessy of the Superior Court of Justice has championed justice education initiatives in Ontario\u2019s Northeast Region during her time as chair of the local OJEN committee from its inception in 2002.\u00a0 She is responsible for developing many innovative justice education programs in both Sudbury and Manitoulin Island, including a thriving annual mock trial tournament in Sudbury and responsive justice education programs on Manitoulin Island.\u00a0 She has also taken steps to address the under-participation of French schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OJEN was pleased to support Justice Hennessy\u2019s study leave, in which she researched and developed new approaches to justice education with Indigenous youth. Not only does Justice Hennessy strive to ensure young people have access to positive and meaningful first interactions with the justice system, she promotes to her fellow judges the value of engaging with students in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>I started going into classrooms in Sudbury over 15 years ago, then I switched my<\/em> <em>focus to Indigenous communities, setting up Mock Trials in classrooms, bringing<\/em> <em>students into the courtroom, and later adapting activities to offer all kinds of<\/em> <em>substantive legal exercises and career days. I learned more than I ever could<\/em> <em>have imagined<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>I have found that schools, classrooms and student activities are some of the best<\/em> <em>places to learn from and about other communities. The community classroom<\/em> <em>really can become our classroom for building cultural competence.
