{"id":28822,"date":"2024-09-19T10:52:22","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T14:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ojen.ca\/?p=28822"},"modified":"2024-09-19T10:57:27","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T14:57:27","slug":"sli-new-school-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/en\/sli-new-school-year","title":{"rendered":"Summer Law Institute kicks off the new school year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201c<em>Topical, current, informative<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I&#8217;m already thinking about what I&#8217;m going to use to breathe life into my classroom.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I learned about a number of resources that I had not known, that I plan to incorporate in my classes.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28827\" src=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/sli-4-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"783\" height=\"528\"><\/p>\n<p>Teachers from as far away as Windsor in the south and Dryden in the north met in Toronto for the Summer Law Institute on August 27 and 28. The two-day conference brought educators together with legal professionals and academics to learn about a range of issues currently facing the justice system. Topics included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Digital Privacy,<\/li>\n<li>2SLGBTQI+ Issues and the Law,<\/li>\n<li>Education Advocacy at the Toronto North West Justice Centre,<\/li>\n<li>The Gladue Court and Indigenous Learning Centre: Tour and Discussion,<\/li>\n<li>Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID),<\/li>\n<li>In Conversation with Nader Hasan,<\/li>\n<li>The Top Five Cases of 2023,<\/li>\n<li>and a preview of new resources from OJEN and Canadian Civil Liberties Education Trust, (CCLET).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to attending workshop sessions, teachers received new classroom resources, participated in an educator\u2019s roundtable discussion and celebrated the 2024 recipient of the Hux-Kiteley Exemplary Justice Educator Award.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28831\" src=\"https:\/\/ojen2024.turnbull.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/sli-7-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"790\" height=\"546\"><\/p>\n<p>Although participants gave positive feedback on all of the sessions, the one that was almost unanimously cited as a favourite was, \u201cIn Conversation with Nader Hasan: His Life, His Career and the Umar Zameer Trial\u201d. Mr. Hasan, a lawyer from Stockwoods LLP, spoke about the role of a defence lawyer and discussed his recent case defending Umar Zameer against first degree-murder charges.
