Keegstra a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 enseigner au niveau secondaire \u00e0 Eckville, en Alberta. Il a enseign\u00e9 dans cette ville pendant environ 10 ans avant d&rsquo;\u00eatre mis sous examen pour avoir enseign\u00e9 \u00e0 ses \u00e9tudiants du mat\u00e9riel faisant la promotion de pr\u00e9judices raciaux contre les juifs.<\/p>\n<p>En 1984, M. Keegstra a \u00e9t\u00e9 accus\u00e9 en vertu du paragraphe 319(2) du Code criminel du Canada d\u2019avoir d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment promu la haine contre un groupe identifiable. M. Keegstra a contest\u00e9 cette accusation au motif que le paragraphe 319(2) du Code criminel violait le droit \u00e0 la libert\u00e9 d&rsquo;expression qui lui \u00e9tait conf\u00e9r\u00e9 par l&rsquo;alin\u00e9a 2b) de la Charte canadienne des droits et libert\u00e9s. La Cour supr\u00eame du Canada a statu\u00e9 que l\u2019article 319 violait effectivement le droit \u00e0 la libert\u00e9 d\u2019expression, mais que cela \u00e9tait justifi\u00e9 en vertu de l\u2019article premier de la Charte.
