London OJEN Committee Organizes Law Institute for Teachers

OJEN’s Law Institutes are professional development conferences for secondary school teachers of law and law related courses.  Law Institutes provide opportunities for teachers to learn about current legal issues from justice professionals who are knowledgeable of them.  OJEN committees, with their connections to local justice professionals, have frequently worked with OJEN staff deliver successful Institutes in their area that respond to the needs of their respective communities.

On Friday, February 23, the London OJEN Committee is offering a full day Law Institute, the first in that city since 2005.  It will be hosted by the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law.  Teachers from local school boards were surveyed about the legal topics they would find most useful for their classrooms.  Based on their input, the committee put together a day of sessions led by an incredible lineup of speakers from the local legal community.

• Introduction to Torts: Dean Erika Chamberlain, Western Law; Kevin Ross, Lerners LLP 
• Landlord/Tenant Board: Laura Glithero, Cohen Highley LLP; Joe Hoffer, Cohen Highley LLP; Shannon Kiekens, Cohen Highley LLP
• Criminal Law 101: Damon Hardy, Criminal Defence Lawyer; Fraser Ball, Deputy Crown Attorney

The London Committee has been supported by OJEN’s Justice Education Fellow, Allysa Jervis, who has recruited a team of law students from Western Law to assist with the conference on the day.  Look for more information about the Institute next month.
